The paper is a gateway, not a boundary.
Research can be a game worth playing.

Far from pushing people out of research, the AI era lowers the threshold for playing it: some play, everyone can watch. Renascience turns post-paper scholarship into playable, watchable, joinable knowledge objects, with a curation platform, a new kind of journal, and a research game engine called Wendao.

The problem: three things the paper cannot carry

1

The paper is a historical invention

Philosophical Transactions (1665) compressed a letter network into a mailable print object; the paper's length, structure, and issues came from the economics of paper and post.2

2

The cut-away workshop

Papers keep the success story. Positive results made up 70–92% of 2,434 papers;12 most of 1,500 surveyed researchers failed to reproduce others' work;10 retractions passed 10,000 in 2023.14

3

The bottleneck moved

A paper in fifty-four seconds;30 most AI hypotheses cannot be verified;39 Tao: institutions designed for scarcity suffer proof indigestion under abundance.19

Evidence: Tao's five stages

Solve → verify → explain → be digested by the community → enter the textbooks. AI accelerates the first two; the last three are human work, the slowest and least optimizable. The measuring stick: a proof no human can properly explain should be viewed as incomplete, even if formally verified.19

Evidence: the flood, 2026 edition

STM: article output +53% over 2014–2024;5 NeurIPS 2025 received 21,575 submissions;9 at Agents4Science model reviewers correlated at only 0.48 and over half of submissions had flagged references.27 The constraint on science is moving from production to evaluation.40

Thirteen theses

Thesis 13 is new in v0.5. The full argument is in the manifesto essay on the site.

The paper is a historical invention, not the destiny of knowledge. It suited the print era; it should not monopolize the AI era.
Journals should move from print containers to certification, curation, guidance, and public display.
Scholarly outputs should become curated, dynamic knowledge objects. Text, data, code, figures, video, logs, failures, ethics, and AI interfaces all belong to the work.
Reproducibility is designed in from the start. Work that cannot be checked should not enjoy high credit.
Failed, null, and replicated results should be recorded, searchable, and valued.
AI should be a transparent assistant, not an anonymous shadow author.
The human contribution is question-making, judgment, embodied experience, responsibility, anomaly perception, and imagination.
The public, students, and adjacent fields are legitimate readers.
Scholarly objects should be friendly to humans and actionable for machines.
Publication begins public revision rather than ending inquiry.
Evaluation should turn to trustworthiness, openness, reproducibility, explanatory power, public value, and reuse.
Build the platform, the journal, and Wendao so that humans and AI cooperate.
Science should be playable, watchable, and joinable.AI AI lowers the threshold of operating research, not the standard for judging it; some play, everyone may watch, and every result must be explained, checkable, and owned.

Our gap

AI made production cheap and moved scarcity to verification, explanation, digestion, and evaluation, which need people, audiences, and institutions. Heavy-asset players do not build this layer; publishing platforms still count papers; citizen-science platforms lack an AI engine. RenaSci sits at the intersection: research as playable, watchable runs, results as digestible knowledge objects.

Where we differ from, and agree with, the resisters

Harris, Sweeting and others defend doing mathematics without AI, for oneself;22 we agree that abstaining is legitimate, but institutions cannot rest on individual choice. Bloom's unread proofs and Gowers's eutrophication are real risks;24 the answer is not to limit participation but to make reading, explaining, and owning the price of admission.

Where we differ from, and agree with, the accelerators

Tsimerman expects AI to surpass mathematicians soon;22 Charton notes that every mathematical tool automated something. We do not bet on capability; like Tao, we condition on it and ask about values.19 Narayanan is right that automating peer review hands the direction of progress to AI.33
